Michael Tasner: Marketing in the Moment - Author interview
Entrepreneur, speaker, charity proponent, and founder of Taz Solutions, Inc., Michael Tasner, in his practical and idea filled book Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First.
Michael Tasner describes how to achieve success in the rapidly evolving world of next generation internet, mobile, smartphones, and social marketing.
Thanks to Michael Tasner for his time, and for his intriguing and informative responses to the questions. They are greatly appreciated.
What was the background to writing this book Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First?
Michael Tasner: I run a web site marketing firm, and to be quite honest, 95% of businesses can't afford our services. But the businesses that couldn't afford our services were the ones I was most passionate about. So I wanted to write a how to guide for those businesses to be able to grow their profits quickly.
There are so many social media tools available, along with blogging platforms, how is a business person to know which tools work best for their business?
Michael Tasner: In the most simplest of forms, the tools you should be using are ones where your customers and prospects are hanging out. For example, if you're a musician, Myspace is great, if your a company selling hurricane windows, a Facebook Business Page is a better tool.
You describe the shift from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 as happening at the present time. Why are the differences between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 so important for marketers to understand?
Michael Tasner: The biggest shift is the modes of interaction and the time. We are looking at things on mobile devices and have less time. If you take away only one thing the biggest is mobile... we're in a mobile age, line none other.
Michael Tasner (photo left)
How is the movement to mobile devices changing marketing and how content is shared?
Michael Tasner: This is the biggest trend... Ive been writing about mobile for four years. In the next 1-2 years, everyone will be browsing web sites and buying things from a mobile device. Your web site and materials all need to be mobile compliant, you also need to get a mobile strategy in place, FAST.
You write that blogging is transforming into microblogging. What do you mean by that transition and why is it important?
Michael Tasner: We're becoming busier and busier and hit with more marketing messages each day... therefore, would you rather read an entire 1000 word article, or the most important point summed up in 140 characters or less?
Many people have heard about apps. Why is it important to understand how apps work and how they relate to marketing?
Michael Tasner: With the rise of mobile devices, apps are becoming the norm. Many businesses should look into getting applications developed as they continue to grow in popularity.
Why is virtual reality marketing a concept that marketers should understand?
Michael Tasner: This is one of those trends that's great for service businesses. Instead of flying all over the world, you can conduct the meeting in a virtual space. Its also great to test out if you do a lot of trade shows.
How can collaboration be made more effective for marketers?
Michael Tasner: This is more of a speed thing... the faster you can get things done, the faster you are to market. My favorite tool is Google Docs.. between Google and Salesforce.com, I run and manage all my marketing campaigns.
How can a marketer put all of the components of Web 3.0 together into an integrated and effective whole?
Michael Tasner: The first step is to do the 360 degree audit I talk about in the book and see where you are lacking. Then start with one of the places and grow from there.
What is next for Michael Tasner?
Michael Tasner: I have two more books in the works, and continue to speak throughout the world to help turn dreams into reality.

"Web 3.0 marketing describes the next wave that is already taking place and is the shift from web 2.0. The key driving factors to Web 3.0 marketing include browsing habits, more intelligent information, the experience we're looking for, and the openness of the Web", writes entrepreneur, speaker, charity proponent, and founder of Taz Solutions, Inc., Michael Tasner, in his practical and idea filled book Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First. The author describes how to achieve success in the rapidly evolving world of next generation internet, mobile, smartphones, and social marketing.
Michael Tasner recognizes that much of the information surrounding Web 3.0 is more hype than substance. The author moves beyond the noise to provide real world strategies for marketing in the new online and mobile landscapes. Michael Tasner shares his proven techniques and tactics for realizing actual results that outperform the usual bromides and homilies. The author distinguishes between the approaches to Web 3.0 that provide profits, and those alleged techniques that produce very little in the way of revenue. Michael Tasner offers substantive strategies for time frames ranging from three months, to six months, to one year, complete with the steps necessary to reach each benchmark.
Michael Tasner (photo left) understands that not all of the Web 3.0 techniques and technologies are needed by all businesses. At the same time, the author provides a solid overview of the leading Web 3.0 concepts and how to use them to best advantage. The author points to the importance for marketers of recognizing that times and tactics are changing so as to remain on the leading edge of Web 3.0 developments. Michael Tasner offers a critical explanation of why creating compelling unique content, along with the ability to collaborate with others are essential to success. For the author, a Web 3.0 marketer must understand and incorporate the following components:
* Microblogging
* Virtual reality world
* Customization and personalization
* Mobile
* On-demand collaboration
For me, the power of the book is how Michael Tasner provides a no nonsense set of marketing strategies for Web 2.0 that cover all the key technologies and marketing methods of that exciting new world. The author shares the reasons for moving past the familiar and well trodden Web 2.0 paths, and into the already unfolding Web 3.0 universe. Michael Tasner explains that the already saturated Web 2.0 landscape is limited, while the emerging Web 3.0 world is less utilized, is faster, more collaborative, and is less invasive for users. Michael Tasner demonstrates how to effectively leverage the Web 3.0 advantages,and how to develop an overall goal oriented strategy for achieving success.
I highly recommend the leading edge thinking book Marketing in the Moment: The Practical Guide to Using Web 3.0 Marketing to Reach Your Customers First by Michael Tasner, to anyone seeking a reliable and unique road map for navigate the new and relatively untraveled world of Web 3.0. The techniques outlined in this handy book are effective, practical, and proven in the real world to produce results.

Reinventing Collapse by Dmitry Orlov - Book review
Reinventing Collapse
The Soviet Experience and American Prospects – Revised & Updated
By: Dmitry Orlov
Published: June 1, 2011
Format: Paperback, 208 pages
ISBN: 9780865716858
Publisher: New Society Publishers
"A decade and a half ago the world went from bipolar to unipolar, because one of the poles fell apart: The SU is no more. The other pole - symmetrically named the US - has not fallen apart., yet; but there are ominous rumblings on the horizon", writes engineer, and eye witness to the collapse of the Soviet Union, Dimitry Orlov, in his thought provoking and prophetic book Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Experience and American Prospects – Revised & Updated. The author presents a unique thought experiment, where he describes the potential triggers for a collapse of the American economy and societal breakdown, and the possible aftermath of those tragic events.
Dmitry Orlov witnessed first hand the collapse of the USSR, and the subsequent economic and social dislocations that resulted from that cataclysmic change. The author presents the resulting events of the Soviet demise as he saw them unfolding in real time. Dmitry Orlov shares his experiences with the hyperinflation of the ruble, the destruction of the industrial base, and the transformation of the country's society in many ways. One of the author's key points is how surprisingly fragile a country's economy really is, and how seemingly small events can lead to a complete unraveling of society and its underpinnings. The most startling aspect of the book, is how Dmitry Orlov sees many serious warning signs that could lead to the unthinkable collapse of the United States economy, and its subsequent social, political, and economic dissolution.
Dmitry Orlov (photo left) recognizes the warning signs for America in the current events and the emerging trends in economics, politics, and culture. For the author, the outlook for the United States is one of potential collapse, resulting from different conditions than those in the former Soviet Union, and also with very different results. Dmitry Orlov considers the inefficiency that was a hallmark of the Soviet economy and society actually softened the blow to the general public following the demise of the USSR. The inefficiency provided a cushion of time and slow activity that created an adjustment period for the people. Because the American system is so much more efficient and time sensitive, the author believes no such buffer would exist following a possible American collapse. The author describes the various scenarios that could lead to an American collapse, and what that aftermath would look like on the ground. The result would be a complete transformation of American society to a more locally focused culture where American ingenuity could even thrive and prosper.
For me, the power of the book is how Dmitry Orlov presents an unflinching and clear eyed view of how the American economy operates today, and what could lead to a possible breakdown of all aspects of the system. The author bases many of his premises on the real world example of the ending of the former Soviet Union, and how the similarities and differences between the USSR and the USA would affect the causes and outcomes of the events. The book is not all doom and gloom, and in many ways the same daring thought experiment that describes a complete societal disaster, also offers hope for renewal and for change.
Dmitry Orlov shares his ideas for preventing an American collapse that alleviate the potential for cataclysm. At the same time, the author warns that the former Soviet Union was much better prepared for collapse than America. With this lack of preparation in mind, the author offers his predictions for how the collapse events would occur, and how an unprepared society would respond to them. The end result would include some winners and countless losers. Along with the decline in economic activity, there might also be a resurgence of family ties, local community involvement,and entrepreneurship.
The author even outlines some potential growth industries and career opportunities that would result from the massive crash events. Overall, this book is a powerful and needed wake up call for Americans that the economic, political, and social problems of the nation must be examined and addressed in a positive manner. For the author, failure to do so might find the United States in an even worse collapse situation as the former Soviet Union.
I highly recommend the thoughtful and insight filled book Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Experience and American Prospects – Revised & Updated by Dmitry Orlov, to anyone seeking a well reasoned discussion of what might happen in the event of a catastrophic collapse of the American economy. The author combines his personal experience with some intriguing insights into the American economy and culture, and arrives at some fascinating and often frightening forecasts.
Read the timely and controversial book Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Experience and American Prospects – Revised & Updated by Dmitry Orlov, and examine for yourself the many and varied warning signs that the United States must address to avoid meeting a similar fate to the former Soviet Union. This book is an eye opener for anyone who believes that America can continue on its current course without facing serious consequences. The author provides compelling evidence that potential disaster is on the horizon, and shares some ideas to either divert calamity, or how to survive and thrive, should the unthinkable become a reality.

Consensus-Oriented Decision-Making by Tim Hartnett
Consensus-Oriented Decision-Making
The CODM Model for Facilitating Groups to Widespread Agreement
By: Tim Hartnett, Ph.D.
Published: April 26, 2011
Format: Paperback, 208 pages
ISBN-10: 0865716897
ISBN-13: 978-0865716896
Publisher: New Society Publishers
"Consensus-Oriented-Decision-Making (CODM) is a powerful group decision-making process. It can be applied to virtually any typ of decision in almost any type of group. Whatever the content of the decision a group is addressing, CODM can be used as the process for making that decision", writes group facilitator and mediator Tim Hartnett, Ph.D., in his very intelligent and highly accessible book Consensus-Oriented Decision-Making: The CODM Model for Facilitating Groups to Widespread Agreement. The author describes the principles behind the Consensus-Oriented-Decision-Making (CODM) technique, and demonstrates how to implement the concepts effectively and seamlessly into any decision making process.
Tim Hartnett understands the critical connection between the importance of decision making and its process for any size or type of group, and the effect of the resulting decisions on the ultimate effectiveness of that group. With that crucial concern in mind, the author offers the workable and very efficient CODM model as a repeatable step based road map to achieving effective and widely accepted decisions. The system combines inclusion of the maximum number or participants with the seemingly contradictory concept of maximum efficiency. CODM is based on the premise that a large group of people, acting in a collaborative manner, can discover and implement superior ideas and decisions to any individual acting alone. With the largest number of people involved in a democratic decision making process, the level of overall commitment to the final solution is greater, and the chances of success are increased dramatically as a result.
Tim Hartnett, Ph.D. (photo left) presents a comprehensive group decision making process, developed through years of personal and professional experience, in group facilitation. The concept also employs methods gleaned from mediation and inter-personal communication. The result of this multi-disciplinary approach to group dynamics is a stronger and more collaborative group able to reach consensus for stronger and more effective decision outcomes. The methodology facilitates agreement whether decisions require unanimous consent, a voting procedure, or an executive made final selection. The collaborative approach presented with CODM involves:
* Rich insights into group dynamics and how they work
* Conflict resolution that is both effective and respectful
* Communication skills involving listening and sharing ideas
For me, the power of the book is how Tim Hartnett combines a strong theoretical background for Consensus-Oriented-Decision-Making (CODM) with a powerful step by step process for implementing the concept for any type of group. The author presents a repeatable system that will help any family, business, non-profit, community, or governmental group achieve decisions that are not only widely accepted but include input from the maximum number of people.
Tim Hartnett's commitment to a process that is collaborative and democratic is not only admirable, but is also very effective and results oriented. The author puts in place rules for reducing internal conflict, for reaching the final decision, and for getting full agreement and closure on the issue. Tim Hartnett understands group dynamics, and incorporates that critical element, along with conflict resolution techniques, and communication. into enriching the process.
I highly recommend the democracy supporting and group cohesion strengthening book Consensus-Oriented Decision-Making: The CODM Model for Facilitating Groups to Widespread Agreement, by Tim Hartnett, Ph.D., to anyone in any size or type of organization seeking a more effective, collaborative, and inclusive method of achieving more effective decisions. The author offers a practical guide, filled with hands on examples and a step by step plan, to reaching collaborative outcomes for any group.
Read the engagingly written and well structured book Consensus-Oriented Decision-Making: The CODM Model for Facilitating Groups to Widespread Agreement, by Tim Hartnett, Ph.D., and discover how to transform your current organizational or group decision making process into one that is inclusive, collaborative, democratic, and effective. This book is the key to efficient and widely embraced decisions that achieve successful implementation and results.

"When we are so in sync that we can practically complete each other's sentences, we've tapped into the power of resonance. And when we've tapped into the power of resonance, we've clicked", writes speaker and consultant, Dr. Rick Kirshner, in his engaging and very practical book How to Click with People: The Secret to Better Relationships in Business and in Life. The author describes how getting along with others, through that sudden and almost instant connection he calls clicking, helps people to advance in their careers and enhance their business success.
Rick Kirshner recognizes that some people just naturally click well with other people. Indeed, almost everyone has experienced that feeling of resonance and clicking with someone in their lives. For the author, this phenomenon need not be confined to just a small circle of friends and colleagues. Rick Kirschner demonstrates that clicking with others is not an innate talent possessed by only a fortunate few people. Instead, the author offers steps and techniques to be learned and practiced, that transform clicking into another skill that can be learned and developed by anyone. For Tick Kirschner, a person's skills in working effectively with other people are the true keys to success in careers, business, and in one's personal life.
Rick Kirschner (photo left) understands that all business is people business. With that simple, yet very powerful premise in mind, the author shares methods and ideas to help the individual get along better with other people. Dr. Kirschner doesn't advocate subservience or being a yes person. Instead, the author recommends treating people as equals, listening to their ideas, and treating others with respect. Rick Kirschner identifies four basic communication types that people must identify and understand, so as to enhance their ability, to click with all types of people. Those four basic communication styles are:
* The action-oriented individual
* The accuracy-oriented individual
* The approval-oriented individual
* The appreciation-oriented individual
For me, the power of the book is how Dr. Rick Kirschner presents the empowering concept of clicking and resonating with others in a holistic and easy to understand and implement format. The author provides a strong theoretical background to the concept of clicking and why that resonance with others is so important. Rick Kirscher combines that theory with a series of practical steps and methodology for developing and practicing a strong sense of clicking with others. A regular practice of the skills taught in the book will result in anyone achieving a higher level of instant rapport with other people of all communication types, including those problem people with whom we never seem to be able to connect. Rick Kirschner strengthens his book with an important section on building the click factor in teams and across entire organizations.
I highly recommend the personal communication building and empowering book How to Click with People: The Secret to Better Relationships in Business and in Life by Dr. Rick Kirschner, to anyone in any career, business, or walk of life who seeks to improve their personal and professional relationships with other people. The author wisely considers all business to be based on the connections and interactions between people, and this book teaches anyone how to become much better at the relationship building side of their career, business, and off work lives.
Read the insightful and rapport boosting book How to Click with People: The Secret to Better Relationships in Business and in Life by Dr. Rick Kirschner, and discover the personal empowerment enhancing skills of connecting better with others. When you click with other people, you enjoy life and work more, and your success rate in all aspects of your life soars to ever greater heights.

From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta by Pasca Bokar Thiam - Book review
From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta
How West African Standards of Aesthetics Shaped the Music of the Delta Blues
By: Pascal Bokar Thiam, Ed.D.
Published: August 18, 2010
Format: Paperback, 178 pages
ISBN-10: 1609278615
ISBN-13: 978-1609278618
Publisher: Cognella
"Jazz in its inspirations and its blues, in its despair and its hopes embodies through creative rhythmic intuition the African forms of expression and the cultural standards of aesthetics of the African continent exacerbated by the poignantly violent and bloody socio-cultural experience of Africans and African Americans with American slavery, lynching, Jim Crow laws of segregation, economic, political, and academic oppression in the United States, writes University of San Francisco, Performing Arts Adjunct Professor Pascal Bokar Thiam, Ed.D., in his compelling and brilliant book From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta: How West African Standards of Aesthetics Shaped the Music of the Delta Blues. The author describes how not only the jazz and blues musical roots, but the basic standards of aesthetics themselves of of rhythm and dance, are direct descendents of the those still found today in West Africa.
Pascal Bokar Thiam presents an overwhelming case, that despite Americans having a majority of population of European origin, the texture of popular music, vocal tonalities, bent pitches, and blue notes of Africa form the crucial identity of American music. The author describes how popular dance rhythms, from the nineteenth century to today, have much more in common with the cultural aspects of Western Africa than with those of the salons of Europe. For Pascal Bokar Thiam, the harmonics and tonalities of the banjo, the oldest African musical instrument, provide more of a basis for American music and dance, than do the Baroque, Classical and Romantic tones of Europe. The author offers powerful evidence that American popular music and dance is West African, rather than European in its aesthetics, its rhythms, and its very basic musical notes and formations.
Pascal Bokar Thiam, Ed.D. (photo left) points out that combined with the often tragic and heartbreaking experiences of Africans and African Americans in the United States, the very essence of the Jazz aesthetic that emerged from West Africa, has become the global symbol of artistic freedom. The author begins his musical journey with an examination of the culture of West Africa, and on the Niger River, the cultural highway for ideas in the region. Pascal Bokar Thiam provides an in depth description of the important empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai, and their tremendous impact on both culture and civilization. The author shows how the movement of trade brought along the aesthetics and musical traditions in their wake. Pascal Bokar Thiam describes how these ideas, sounds, and rhythms took root in the great cities of West Africa over the centuries. Pascal Bokar Thiam also presents some very critical research into African cultural elements expressed through the arts:
* Rhythmic intuition
* Significance of clapping on the second and fourth beat
( The oral tradition of musical transmission
* West African visual arts
* Musical role in West African society
* The music of West Africa and the caste system
* Slavery and the Atlantic slave trade
* West African aesthetics as a means of survival and cultural identity
* The Mississippi Delta Blues
For me, the power of the book is how Pascal Bokar Thiam brings together the many threads that form the musical heritage America, from its West African origins, through the jazz and blues of the Mississippi, to the dance floors of today. The author combines the elements of history, culture, and music across continents and centuries, arriving at the insight that American popular music owes a powerful debt to the people of West Africa. The journey of the people of West Africa, through the tragic ordeal of slavery and discrimination, formed the crucible through which modern American music in all of its variations was formed. From the rhythms, to the notes and tonalities, to dance, the author presents American music as a West African cultural extension and practices.
I highly recommend the insightful and important book From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta: How West African Standards of Aesthetics Shaped the Music of the Delta Blues by Pascal Bokar Thiam, Ed.D., to anyone seeking a deeper and richer understanding of the trans-Atlantic crossing of West African music, and how an entire aesthetic culture and way of approaching the world survived and thrived despite the challenges faced in the new world. This is also a book about social justice, and how art forms provided a basis for freedom of speech and expression, despite an often oppressive and violent culture.
Read the fascinating and well researched book From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta: How West African Standards of Aesthetics Shaped the Music of the Delta Blues by Pascal Bokar Thiam, Ed.D., and discover how the culture and aesthetics of West Africa formed the foundation of modern American popular music, dance, and the arts. This book will change the way you look at the culture American performing arts forever.

Ottman, as she describes how thinking and acting green has gone mainstream. Green marketing is here and is no longer simply a niche market. No longer do marketers use an environmental presentation when marketing products, but promote the added value of those green products. Jacquie Ottman describes how marketers must emphasize primary benefits to win over mainstream customers. With green consumers now forming the mainstream, the time is now to consider the new rules of green marketing on Blog Business Success Radio.

Better Under Pressure by Justin Menkes - Book review
Better Under Pressure
How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others
By: Justin Menkes
Published: May 3, 2011
Format: Hardcover, 208 pages
ISBN-10: 1422138704
ISBN-13: 978-1422138700
Publisher: Harvard Business Press
"The best leaders solicit the best possible performance from themselves and from their people amid the constant change and duress that define enterprise today", writes leading expert in executive assessment Justin menkes in his insightful and research based book Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others. The author describes how many business leaders find their performance and results diminishing when under pressure, while other leaders thrive under stress; and how the abilities of the most effective leaders are skills that can be learned by executives.
Justin Menkes recognizes that turbulent economic and political environments are no longer the exception. They are the new normal in today's global economy. The author understands, that as a result of the challenges presented by these ever increasing stresses are reducing the performance and results for many business leaders. At the same time, however, Justin Menkes points out that other leaders are thriving and achieving ever greater productivity, improved performance, and enhanced levels of growth. For the author, those highly successful leaders perform at their very best when under pressure. Justn Menkes conducted interviews with business leaders to unearth the traits that were shared by the successful leaders, and discovered that not only were these abilities common to them all, but that these high performance skills could be learned by other leaders as well.
Justin Menkes (photo left) presents the three major characteristics of leaders who are not only successful under pressure, but who thrive when under duress. These high achieving leaders realize their own potential, and that of those who they lead. The author provides compelling evidence that the critical traits for thriving in pressure packed situations are skills that can be learned by any leaders. Justin Menkes offers executives the advice of successful leaders for developing those innate capabilities. The research conducted by Justin Menkes discovered three major catalysts to realizing potential:
* Realistic optimism: Confidence in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges while realizing the reality of the circumstances
* Subservience to purpose: Seeing the professional goal as so important that it must be achieved, and that a noble purpose is essential for success
* Finding order in chaos: Bringing clarity out of disparate problems and recognizing how these challenges fit together
For me, the power of the book is how Justin Menkes presents a strong theoretical framework that outlines the core capabilities of the the most successful business leaders. The author bolsters this framework with in depth and compelling interviews with leading CEOs who have proven abilities to success in the most pressure laden circumstances. With this information in hand, Justin Menkes transforms the CEO experiences into practical skill lessons that can be developed and put into practice by any business leaders.
Justin Menkes presents the capabilities in an easy to understand format, backed by intriguing stories from the interviewed CEOs themselves. These case studies demonstrate the essential, and often counter to natural behavior, attributes in action. The overall result is an intelligent examination of how and why some leaders succeed in stressful and challenging situations, while others fail to reach their full potential.
I highly recommend the fascinating and well researched book Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others by Justin Menkes, to anyone seeking an enlightening examination of the common skill sets that elevate successful leaders to an entirely new level, despite seemingly overwhelming pressures placed upon them. The author's inclusion of self evaluation sections in each chapter guide executives toward understanding their existing capabilities and how to enhance them further.
Read the engaging and leadership boosting book Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others by Justin Menkes, and discover how to join top leaders in achieving outstanding results when the stress levels and duress are most challenging to your company and your employees. This book will help you bring out your inborn talent for overcoming even the most challenging obstacles.

Phil Simon: The Age of the Platform - Author interview
Technology consultant and speaker Phil Simon was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions about his fourth book project The Age of the Platform.
Phil Simon describes how he is utilizing a unique fund raising technique using Kickstarter, how he is bypassing the constraints of traditional publishing, and his ideas for marketing the new title.
Thanks to Phil Simon for his time and for his interesting and thoughtful responses to the questions. They are greatly appreciated.
What was the background to writing The Age of the Platform?
Phil Simon: I thought about two things. First, I thought about how I transformed my own small business over the last three years. I have diversified and moved into many different lines of business since 2008. Second, if I had to work for a large company, which one(s) would it be? I have always had great admiration for Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. I looked at what they were doing—and why they were so successful. I realized that companies of any size can learn a great deal from them.
What topics does The Age of the Platform cover and what makes it different from other books in the field?
Phil Simon: The Age of the Platform is, to my knowledge, unlike any book out there. Sure, many books have been written about Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google—and I’ve read quite a few of them. I unaware of one, however, that looks at these companies in the context of the platforms they have built. What’s more, the book looks at the different planks they have built—and how new platforms such as FourSquare, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Force.com are using the platforms as a new business model.
Is this more than simply another book to add to the already existing small library of books on social media?
Phil Simon: I’m so glad that you asked that question. This is by no means another “me-too” social media book. I actually think that the book is much more like The Long Tail by Chris Anderson in the sense that it defines an entirely different way of doing business. No longer are companies taking the “buy you or crush you” approach. They are embracing mutually beneficial partnerships—and reaping the rewards in the process.
You are facing some challenges in writing this book. What are some of these challenges you are meeting?
Phil Simon: I had signed with a literary agent in the hopes of finding a publisher that would get this book out quickly. Interest from traditional publishers was strong, but they all said that they would put the book out in the spring or summer of 2012. I’m unwilling to wait that long for several reasons. Most important, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and other platforms change far too often these days. This book needs to come out—and soon. So I’ve started a project on Kickstarter to ensure that that happens. I did the same thing with my third book and was pleased with the results.
How has this book pointed out some of the weaknesses of the traditional book publishing model?
Phil Simon: Well, the book itself isn’t really about the publishing industry, although I mention how Amazon and Apple have had success in books on a number of fronts. Traditional book publishing is far too slow these days. People want to read and learn as soon as possible-and it’s easier than ever to circumvent old-school gatekeepers. More and more books are coming out faster and faster. Many publishers are clinging to antiquated methods. They’re less and less relevant these days.
You have expressed concern about the control of the book and the final book product. What are these concerns on your part?
Phil Simon: Well, many people don’t understand that when authors sign contracts with publishers, the latter has final cut. If they don’t like the direction of the book, they can change it. They can dilute the message. Suggestions to improve the book are one thing; but corralling the central theme of the book to make it more “mainstream” increases the risk that the book will not be unique and great. I believe that I have written a great book and I don’t want elements changed for the sake of making it more palatable on some term.
You have arrived at a unique funding solution to bring the control of the book back into your own hands. How does this funding solution work?
Phil Simon: As I did with my previous book, I am using Kickstarter to raise funds and, more important, awareness. After I raise $7,500, people submit payment via Amazon.com. I then send them copies of the book—both physical and electronic.
Should you reach your funding targets, how do you plan to spend the available funds?
Phil Simon: Many self-published books look unprofessional. Mine won’t. The New Small is a case in point. It turned out great. To make that happen, I needed to hire professionals: a cover designer, an editor, a production person, and a proofreader. I’ll also build the site www.theageoftheplatform.com and spend money on public relations.
How do you plan to keep marketing the book to maintain and increase marketing momentum?
Phil Simon: Well, I have a big mouth. People like you are also going to help. Kickstarter does more than allow me to fund the book. I use crowdsource elements like cover design and interior production. I want people to feel like they’re involved in the process of making the book a reality. That should help keep momentum going after the book’s released.
How can people get involved in your book publishing funding initiative?
Phil Simon: It’s easy. Go here.
What is next for Phil Simon?
Phil Simon: I’m turning one of my client’s blogs into a book through my publishing company. That book will be out in October of 2011. I’m also moving to Las Vegas, NV from New Jersey.

"This book tries to describe the wonders entrepreneurs have created and the ones that will solve our energy problems", writes scientist, engineer, and writer on the fuel and oil industries, Howard Johnson, in his visionary and practical idea filled book Energy, Convenient Solutions: How Americans Can Solve the Energy Crisis in Ten Years. The author describes how fossil fuels can be replaced by alternative energy in a decade, with minimal disruption to the current standard of living.
Howard Johnson recognizes the critical importance of researching, discovering, and implementing new and alternative energy sources. The author points out that the continued dependence on fossil fuels alone is a recipe for economic, societal, and international disaster. For Howard Johnson, the good news is that the alternative energy sources exist, and that the technologies to exploit them already exist. The author emphasizes the important role for entrepreneurs in developing alternative energy, technologies, transportation, and home and business solutions. Howard Johnson writes that the really good news is that the opportunity exists to solve the global energy problem in ten years is realistic, but must be acted upon immediately to ward off potential disaster.
Howard Johnson (photo left) presents a dispassionate and objective overview of the energy sources past, present, and future. The author avoids taking political positions, but understands the role that politics play in the current and future opportunities and challenges that exist for alternative energy. One thing that Howard Johnson makes clear is that the days of complete dependence on fossil fuels are over. While he doesn't count the oil industry out, the author considers additional energy sources to be imperative to extend the life of the oil supply. Howard Johnson examines the various fuel, transportation, and energy solutions:
* Fuel energy sources including fossil, non-fossil, manufactured and nuclear
* Other natural energy fuels including solar, water, geothermal and wind
* Electric power plants from all sources
* Distribution of energy
* Fuel powered systems and devices including combustion and non-combustion
* Existing and future hybrid systems
* Energy systems not powered by fuels
For me, the power of the book is how Howard Johnson describes currently available energy and fuel sources as practical and useable solutions to the energy problem. The author provides detail as to the potential and challenges presented by each concept, in light of existing and potential technology, and in the domestic and international political environment. Howard Johnson makes the bold statement that the energy problem can be solved in ten years provided there is a will and consensus among business and political leaders, and the general public to do so. The author sees the tremendous potential for fresh thinking and exciting new technology emerging from entrepreneurs. He also sees entrepreneurs as implementing energy solutions in transportation, homes, and businesses on small and large scales. Howard Johnson also takes a strong stance in support of geothermal energy as a leading component of an alternative energy future.
I highly recommend the positive and must read book Energy, Convenient Solutions: How Americans Can Solve the Energy Crisis in Ten Years by Howard Johnson, to anyone seeking a solutions based book on utilizing alternative energy and technology from an entrepreneurial point of view. This book meets the challenges of technology, applications, and politics head on by offering workable concepts that can be applied immediately. For the author, the problem can be solved with minimal disruption within a decade, but failure to do so could very well result in economic disaster.
Read the solutions oriented and energy entrepreneurial guide Energy, Convenient Solutions: How Americans Can Solve the Energy Crisis in Ten Years by Howard Johnson, and discover how existing technology, alternative energy, and the ingenuity of entrepreneurs can solve the energy crisis. This book provides a real world based way out of the energy problem within a decade. That is a powerful and important idea for everyone to consider.
