Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin - Book Review

Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller

By: Jeff Rubin

Published: May 19, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 304 pages
ISBN: 978-0-307-35751-9
Publisher: Random House Canada

"Cheap oil gives us access to a pretty big world", writes economist Jeff Rubin in his prophetic and eye opening book Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller. Unfortunately, writes the author, the days of cheap oil are about to end, and as a result, that big world is going to become smaller. Because of a fundamental mismatch between a decreasing supply of oil, and its ever growing demand, globalization is about to shrink to a more locally based economy.

Jeff Rubin makes clear that the world economy is fueled by cheap oil. As the global flow of oil is about to face severe shortages due to peak oil, national and global GNP will shrink. The current oil fields are facing serious depletion, and new oil sources are either very expensive to produce, or too small to replace the depleted oil fields of the world. Dreams of replacing freely flowing crude with oil sands, offshore drilling, and ethanol are doomed to failure. Not only are new discoveries rare and limited in size, they cost vast amounts of money and energy to produce. The end result is an ever diminishing rate of return of the energy dollar investment.

Jeff Rubin (photo left) doesn't simply sound warnings of shortages and high oil priced induced recessions, but suggests that there are ways to cope with the lifestyle changes. In a high priced world, with ever increasing energy costs, the trade off of distance for local production will reverse. As transportation costs rise, the value of low wage but distant production centers will disappear. The end result will be a return of manufacturing to domestic locations to avoid ever increasing fuel prices. At the same time, personal lifestyle will adapt to less driving, smaller homes, fewer suburbs and exurbs, and more local community living.

For me, the power of the book is the no nonsense explanation of how the world runs entirely on oil. Jeff Rubin packs the book with solid explanations of why the usual solutions to the oil supply and demand imbalance won't work. The author describes as well why the current economic theory breaks down in the face of peak oil. Current concepts of the relationship between supply and demand, of price, and the effect of efficiency, fail completely in a peak oil world. In their place, Jeff Rubin offers a realistic, if difficult for many to accept, solution to the inevitable increase in oil prices. He accepts that world will shrink from a globalized one to a local and community based one, where life may be lived on a more human scale.

I highly recommend the absolutely must read book Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin, to anyone seeking to understand the true fundamentals behind peak oil and exploding oil prices in the very near future. The book is a wake up call for anyone who believes that somehow technology, new discoveries, or alternative energy will maintain the status quo global economy. Instead, the author pulls no punches in describing how none of these alleged solutions even make a tiny dent in the global appetite for oil.

Read the important book Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin, and be forewarned about the future of oil prices in a world facing rapid oil depletion. Your world is about to get much smaller. It's crucial that you prepare for that day and make the adjustments necessary to cope and prosper in the new post peak oil smaller world.

Building Business Value by Martin O'Neill - Book review

Building Business Value

How to Command a Premium Price for Your Midsized Company

By: Martin O'Neill

Published: May 1, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 156 pages
ISBN: 0982056907
Publisher: Third Bridge Press

"As a C-level executive, your main priority and commitment to your company is to build value". writes Corsum Consulting business strategist Martin O'Neill, in his business transformational book Building Business Value: How to Command a Premium Price for Your Midsized Company. The author describes how average companies sell for a mediocre value of multiples of four or five times earnings, and that poorly run companies sell for much less value. On the other hand, well run value based companies may command premium value of nine or ten times earnings. The book shows how to achieve those premium values for a mid-sized company.

Martin O'Neill considers enhancement of business value to be a leadership driven issue. Building value is based on collaboration and taking a holistic approach to transforming the company effectiveness. The author believes that leaders of a middle sized organization must take an open and honest assessment of the current status of the company. At the same time, the company's leaders must create a vision of a successful future for the business. Once the current evaluation and vision are created, a strategy can be developed to transform the company into a premium valued business.

Martin O'Neill (photo left) recognizes that not all companies are enhancing value for immediate sale or public share offering. Instead, building a superior company can be a longer term process that adds value and creates a stronger business in the marketplace. The author's emphasis is on the process of becoming a great organization, that transforms itself from the ordinary to the extraordinary, and how that is the core of the leader's purpose. As a result, the visionary leader must think constantly about the future, whether in terms of products and services, the industry, or the economy. At the same time, leaders must make a personal commitment to building value, and instill that sense of commitment in their leadership team.

For me, the power of the book is the practical approach to building value in a medium sized company. The author points out that increasing company value is an ongoing process, that requires vision, commitment, and continual improvement and growth, to transform the organization. Martin O'Neill helps his readers by illustrating his concepts with many graphs, diagrams, and flow charts, so that any business leader can follow the process step by step. Since the sale or transfer of ownership of the company is the pay day for the organization's leadership, the author considers it crucial that value be maximized. As a result, the book's focus is on creating a well run business, with dedicated leaders and employees who share in the leader's vision.

I highly recommend the value building textbook Building Business Value: How to Command a Premium Price for Your Midsized Company by Martin O'Neill, to any business leader who seeks to create a vision for creating premium business valuation. The book guides the leader in transforming a lackluster company into a superior business that will build a current and future value well above the usual benchmarks for the industry as a whole.

Read highly readable and practical book Building Business Value: How to Command a Premium Price for Your Midsized Company by Martin O'Neill, and discover how to build not only greatly enhanced monetary value in a company, but to leave a powerful and lasting business legacy as well. Reading this book will pay off for business leaders in much more than money, but in greater satisfaction for everyone in the company as well.

Make Their Day!, Second Edition by Cindy Ventrice - Book review

Make Their Day!, Second Edition

Employee Recognition That Works

By: Cindy Ventrice

Published: May 2009
ISBN-13: 9781576756010
Format: Paperback, 220pp
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers

"It is a simple fact: people who feel valued perform at a much higher level", writes President of Potential Unlimited Seminars, Cindy Ventrice, author of the seminal and completely revised guide to employee recognition that works, Make Their Day!, Second Edition: Employee Recognition That Works. The author explains why traditional employee incentive programs fail, and why intangible rewards that focus on the human needs of employees, are much more effective in achieving their goals.

Cindy Ventrice understands that employees value praise, thanks, opportunity, and respect in the workplace. Employees want to find meaning in their workplace, and they want their contributions to be recognized and valued on a human level. This deep psychological craving for respect and recognition far outweighs tangible incentives, including money. Cindy Ventrice points out correctly, that organizations that value and trust their employees, are more effective at meeting deadlines, providing superior products and services, and achieve greater success. The author provides examples of real companies where traditional employee incentive programs had failed, and were turned around to profitability by an employee recognition culture.

Cindy Ventrice (photo left) recognizes that there is no universal best practices solution that applies to all companies, in all circumstances. Instead, the author believes that employee recognition corporate cultures are as individual as the companies themselves, and the people who they employ. Cindy Ventrice points out that leadership from company executives is needed to build a new company culture, and to build it into the corporate DNA, so that it becomes second nature for everyone. At the same time, the financial, employee turnover, and productivity results from the recognition program require measurement. When real gains are demonstrated by the intangible rewards, the culture will internalize the concept even more deeply into all of its activities.

For me, the power of the book is the author's deep understanding of what is really important to employees. The author provides many real world examples of employee recognition plans that worked well, as well as additional ideas for consideration in other organizations. Instead of expensive bonus and incentive systems, elaborate perks, or plaques on the wall, the most effective recognition programs provide real meaning to work. People want and deserve to recognized and thanked for their accomplishments. At the same time, they want the opportunity to grow as employees and as people. People who are appreciated on a personal level are more productive, have greater job satisfaction, and will take on more responsibility effectively.

I highly recommend the essential employee recognition book Make Their Day!, Second Edition: Employee Recognition That Works by Cindy Ventrice, to anyone seeking to add meaning to work, and to develop an employee recognition culture that works. In difficult economic circumstances, the free intangible rewards suggested in the book, are especially important, as they save money, enhance productivity, and boost profits.

Read the organization changing book Make Their Day!, Second Edition: Employee Recognition That Works by Cindy Ventrice, and stop wasting your time, and that of your employees, on ineffective traditional incentive plans, In their place, instituting the more meaningful intangible rewards will create results that will make everyone in the organization beam with pride.

Upbeat by Rajesh Setty - Book review

Upbeat

Cultivating the Right Attitude to Thrive in Tough Times

By: Rajesh Setty

Published: May 1, 2009
ISBN-13: 9781935073031
Format: Paperback, 96 pp
Publisher: Ashoka Books

"The easiest way to get out of mediocrity is to set higher standards for yourself", writes entrepreneur and thought leader Rajesh Setty in his perceptive and inspirational book Upbeat: Cultivating the Right Attitude to Thrive in Tough Times. While acknowledging the recession, the author points out that many other business people just think about surviving the economic downturn. Instead, this book encourages business people to thrive in any economy, through a combination of attitude, strategy, and positive action.

Rajesh Setty recognizes the trap that business people can fall into regarding a sagging economy. Conversations tend to emphasize the negative aspects of the business climate, and overlook the opportunities that arise as a direct result of those economic forces. As a result, the author stresses the importance of replacing self defeating and negative talk with a flexible examination of what is really happening in the economy. While competitors are cutting back, the author reminds business people of that developing a strategy that enhances strengths and removes outmoded concepts, can deliver profitable results.

Rajesh Setty (photo left) doesn't simply suggest platitudes in his book, but builds on positive attitude adjustments with practical and actionable ideas. By applying such well known and proven techniques as building on the strengths and skills of one's own network, that powerful improvements to the business can take place. The author recognizes that one of the simplest and most ignored principles is that of tenacity. Merely by developing a flexible, yet workable strategy, and sticking with it, a company can succeed where others fail. All too often, people give up and quit, just at the edge of their greatest success.

For me, the power of this compact, yet important book is the blending of keeping a positive attitude with developing and seeing through a powerful business strategy. While the focus of the book is thriving in a recession, the same principles can propel a business to higher profits and industry leadership in a growing economy. More than a mere positive thinking book, Rajesh Setty has created a positive action book, that can transform any business person into a successful one. At the same time, the book will turn a lackluster company into a force in the marketplace.

I highly recommend the inspiring Upbeat: Cultivating the Right Attitude to Thrive in Tough Times by Rajesh Setty, to any business person who is experiencing personal doubts, or a loss of confidence in their company. A recession is never easy for business success, but with the right viewpoint and flexible attitude, great business opportunities can be discovered and turned into profit centers.

Read the short but powerful and life changing book Upbeat: Cultivating the Right Attitude to Thrive in Tough Times by Rajesh Setty, and turn those negative conversations into positive action. This recession may hold more business opportunities than you ever dreamed possible. The book will help you develop a winning strategy in this and any economy.

Hell Yes! by Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin - Book review

Hell Yes!

Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life

By: Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin

Published: March 2009
ISBN-13: 9780740779190
Format: Hardcover, 96pp
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing

"If it's not a "Hell Yes!" then it's a "Hell No". Can these two little words really make your life simpler and happier?", asks best selling author Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin in her inspirational guide to a happier life Hell Yes! Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life. The author's response to that provocative question is, of course, a resounding "Hell Yes!".

Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin recognizes that people often feel pressure or guilt, when asked to perform a task, to attend an event, or give up time for a request. The author points out that unless a person really wants to respond with what she calls a "Hell Yes!", it's better for all concerned to give it a "Hell No!". In a business setting, a person short of time may be asked to do another task. By resisting the temptation to say yes, and avoiding hurt feelings or loss of prestige, the opportunity is opened up for the request to be asked of another employee. Indeed, that co-worker may even respond with an enthusiastic "Hell Yes!", as the task would be a dream come true for them.

Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin (photo left) points out that ego, and concern for the feelings of others, often stand in the way of a person's own dreams and aspirations. The author doesn't believe that anyone should settle for second best in life, in romance, or in a career. By giving oneself permission to say "Hell No!" to a request that is not part of what makes a person happy, the valuable time of everyone concerned is not wasted. Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin is correct when she writes that wonderful opportunities arise constantly, so it's a mistake to agree to something not part of your dream life. By refusing the offer, the opportunity can be presented to someone else who may love that chance to say "Hell Yes!".

For me, the power of this sparsely worded, but wonderfully illustrated by James Yang book, is the simplicity of its message. The author packs many of life's greatest truths into clear and concise sentences, underlining the message of following your own path to happiness. All too often, people say a reluctant yes to projects and events that do not interest them, instead of turning them down. A rejection, writes Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin isn't the end of the world for either person. Instead, it opens up a window of opportunity for someone else. The simple philosophy and having the attitude that anything that is not a "Hell Yes!", should be given a "Hell No!", helps everyone involved to be happier with their lives.

I highly recommend Hell Yes! Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life by Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin, to anyone who has difficulty with refusing unpleasant or unwanted tasks. The requests may can range from those of family, employers, friends, or potential dates. Unless the request fulfills your dreams, it is best to pass the opportunity to others. This book may be especially valuable as a gift to recent high school or college graduates, as sound advice for pursuing their dreams.

Read Hell Yes! Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life by Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin, and make all of your life changing decisions based on the author's simple but powerful formula. If it's not a "Hell Yes!", then give it a "Hell No!". Your life will be happier and more rewarding as a result of those two little words.

The author considers the philosophical and practical issues surrounding the explosive growth of what he calls the global City, and its implications for the future of humanity.

Jeb Bruggman understands the importance of the world City as an instrument of change that represents a revolution. The author takes the issue of globalization to its very roots in the form of global urbanization. Seemingly minor activities and events in one city can affect events worldwide because of the deeply interconnected nature of global cities. Major global changes are occurring at the most local levels, despite the efforts of governments to control them. Individual activities that change the very foundation of cities, happening block by block, create the base for the new urban revolution that is sweeping the world. The new urbanism is changing the very nature of societies in ways never before imagined, presenting new and difficult challenges in their wake.

Jeb Brugmann (photo left) takes the reader on a street level tour of cities across the globe. From the earth shaking changes in the slums of Mumbai to new developments in South America to the crumbling city of Detroit, the author demonstrates how cities can succeed or they can fail. The reader is presented with the wasted opportunities of cities like Toronto and Miami, where city planners have failed to deliver on their promises. Jeb Brugmann also describes the success of community organizers in Chicago. and how block by block, they changed the course of Chicago from a failed city to one with a renewed vibrancy and sense of purpose. Along the way, the author shares his ideas for developing an new urban strategy, to replace traditional urban planning.

For me, the power of the book is the author's recognition of the transformational power of the new global urbanism, and the unique challenges and opportunities they present for the future. Jeb Brugmann takes a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to his concept of urban strategy. He points out correctly, that for too long, the urban revolution has been ignored, and the importance of where people live, and the value they gain from an urban environment were left unnoticed. The author points out how top down city planning has been imposed on the urban residents, often with disastrous results, while grassroots actions by the people themselves, have achieved far greater returns.

I highly recommend the very important urban strategy book Welcome To The Urban Revolution: How Cities Are Changing The World by Jeb Brugmann, to anyone seeking to understand the importance of shaping the world's cities, to meet the challenge of global problems, and to support the great ambitions of the people who reside within them. The author's grand urban strategy begins with local change, and then expands to the build the entire city, and outward to the interconnected global City.

Read the essential city building handbook Welcome To The Urban Revolution: How Cities Are Changing The World by Jeb Brugmann, and prepare yourself for to address the issues of building productive, equitable, and sustainable cities that work for everyone. The new urban revolution is taking place at this very moment. This must read book will help you to understand it and to build urbanism in the new expanding, and interlinked global City of the future.

Last Light Over Carolina by Mary Alice Monroe - Book review

Last Light over Carolina

By: Mary Alice Monroe

Published: July 14, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 384 pages
ISBN-10: 1-4165-4970-6
ISBN-13: 978-1-4165-4970-3
Publisher: Pocket Books

In lyrical prose, as warm as the breeze off the South Carolina coast, best selling author Mary Alice Monroe tells a tale of rocky marriage, and the tragic day when the pain of the past didn't matter any more. The wonderful novel Last Light over Carolina is filled with beautifully drawn characters, filled with every human emotion, bringing them to life. The story revolves around a troubled marriage, that hides the deep but seldom expressed love, between shrimp boat Captain Bud Morrison and his wife Carolina. Their love of each other, of their family, and of the sea, are the anchor of this beautiful novel.

Mary Alice Monroe weaves together a lifetime, within the confines of a single day. When Bud is trapped alone on the sea, on his shrimp boat named the Miss Carolina, in honor of his wife, he realizes the true depth of his love. On shore, Carolina finds her mind remembering things past and how powerful her love is for her husband. Through memories of both good times and bad, Bud and Carolina find redemption and forgiveness for past transgressions that no longer matter. They also learn the value of family and how a tragedy can make a group of broken people whole again.

Mary Alice Monroe (photo left) creates a world where the town, the ocean, and the people who depend on the sea's bounty, are all characters in the story. Captain Bud Morrison is torn between his wife Carolina, and her alter ego boat that bears her name. Bud loves the freedom of the sea and his shrimp boat, but that separation of wife Carolina from the sea, creates a deep rift in their marriage. With his boat as his mistress, Bud turns away from his wife. Only later, does he come to realize that the ship and the sea can't replace the real Carolina. Together, he and his wife are whole, but when apart, their lives become empty and full of despair.

With parallels to Hemingway's classic The Old Man and the Sea, Mary Alice Monroe turns Bud's tragic accident and a storm at sea into a life changing event. Forced by his own mortality to face honestly the decisions made in his life, Bud Morrison recognizes that what he thought were his life's priorities were mere illusion. What truly matters is love and family, and acceptance of one another through the storms of life. Carolina remembers storms of the past, as well as the stormy days of her marriage to Bud. After a storm, there is a second chance to rebuild. Both Bud and Carolina realize that their own love, and of those around them, deserve a second chance too.

I highly recommend Last Light over Carolina by Mary Alice Monroe, to anyone seeking a powerful love story between two people adrift on the sea, and in danger of striking a rock and sinking their marriage. The book contains the timeless themes of love, betrayal, redemption, and forgiveness. It's a story about being granted a precious second chance at happiness, and grabbing on and never letting it go again.

Read Last Light over Carolina by Mary Alice Monroe, and be swept away by the rich detail of life in a close knit coastal South Carolina shrimp fishing town, where life depends on nature and the bounty of the sea. Discover the power of love and forgiveness, the importance of family, and how sometimes the unexpected events of life can work true miracles.

Gracious Living On Social Security by Valerie Kent - Book review

Gracious Living on Social Security

How an Older Woman and a Younger Man Made Style Affordable

By: Valerie Kent

Published: February 23, 2009
Format: Paperback, 152 pages
ISBN-10: 0615211569
ISBN 13: 978-0-615-21156-5
Publisher: Tree Farm Books

"Having to live within our Social Security income forced us to address our concerns and establish new priorities. The challenge was to turn limited assets to the best advantage while living gracefully in the process", writes eighty-eight year old enthusiast for living life to the fullest Valerie Kent, in her practical yet personable book Gracious Living on Social Security: How an Older Woman and a Younger Man Made Style Affordable. The author describes in detail how to live a respectable and fulfilling life in retirement, while earning only a modest pension income.

Valerie Kent understands that people arrive at retirement with vastly different levels of wealth and income. She shares personal details of her finances, and those of her husband, in a manner that gives their retirement life in St. Petersburg, Florida a personal touch. Along with sound financial advice for budgeting a fixed income, Valerie Kent describes how to eat well and stay fit, so that life can be enjoyed for many decades after retirement. Her goal is to help retirees live an enriching and satisfying life, while ensuring that personal finances don't become a problem. She succeeds well in that department, and even adds useful advice for taking a part time job, should money be required for an unexpected purpose or a desired lucury.

Valerie Kent entered retirement in relatively difficult financial circumstances following her divorce, that left her very low on funds. Her subsequent marriage, and its financial ramifications, provides a useful budgetary framework for weddings at any age. Her discussion of travel and independence is great advice for any senior citizens who wish to fulfill lifelong dreams of seeing distant lands, both safely and without breaking their bank accounts. Her advice on fitness and proper diet is well backed with sound money management tips to ensure that these crucial health issues are not forgotten or ignored due to cost. Overall, her goal of helping retirees live their golden years with grace is achieved very well indeed.

Foe me, the power of the book is how Valerie Kent describes how to turn a modest income into a very fulfilling retirement, complete with travel and a wide circle of friends, without scrimping and pinching pennies like a miser. Indeed, the advice on purchasing clothing at a fraction of its cost, to ensure that one always looks their best, is valuable knowledge for people of any age. The advice on purchasing healthy food and maintaining physical fitness is essential for everyone at every stage of life. The book succeeds well at its primary purpose of helping retirees ro live well on the fixed income of Social Security.

I highly recommend the retirement enhancing book Gracious Living on Social Security: How an Older Woman and a Younger Man Made Style Affordable by Valerie Kent, to anyone at or near retirement age who desires a rich and rewarding life beyond their employment years. The advice is especially important during a recessionary economy, whether the reader is a senior citizen, or a much younger person seeking to live a graceful life on a reduced income.

Read the personal and helpful book Gracious Living on Social Security: How an Older Woman and a Younger Man Made Style Affordable by Valerie Kent, and live life in retirement with grace and dignity. The author demonstrates clearly that a wonderful retirement on a fixed income is not only possible, but not that difficult to achieve with a little planning and care.

The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor by Colin Tudge

The Link

Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor

By: Colin Tudge, Josh Young

Published: May 20, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 272 pages
ISBN: 9780316070089
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company

Ida looks innocent enough at first glance. A closer look reveals a 47 million year old fossil of a female, that may represent the so-called "missing link" in the primate family. The almost perfectly preserved fossil of Ida, discovered in Messel, Germany, may be the earliest known ancestor of humans. The story of Ida, and the scientific team led by Jorn Hurum of Norway who examined her fossilized remains, is described in wonderful detail by science writer Colin Tudge in his important book The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor.

Ida (photo left) lived 47 million years ago in the much warmer climate of the Eocene Epoch. Her home was near a crater lake, where she may have drowned due to poisonous gas escaping from the water. Her entire body was preserved in the mud bottom of the lake, as she became fossilized. The fossil was discovered by a private collector in the 1980s, and later sold to a museum in Oslo, Norway. Author Colin Trudge describes how a team of world renowned scientists confirmed her importance to the study of primate evolution. The author also provides a detailed portrait of the Eocene world, that was very different in climate and global geography from our own, of which Ida was a resident.

Colin Tudge (photo left) also provides a strong outline of the various controversies surrounding the importance of Ida's discovery. Not all scientists agree that Ida is a "missing link" and there is even doubt about her primate origins. The author, through discussions with the scientific team, presents a solid and convincing case that Ida is is indeed one of the most important fossil discoveries of all time. At the same time, Colin Tudge shares the vital information that the study of Ida is nowhere near completion. The little fossil has many more secrets to reveal, and may change even more long held scientific paradigms. The crucial point is that science adds onto what is already known, questioning claims made for every new discovery, resulting in deeper research and even more often startling answers.

For me, the power of the book is the even handed, objective story of the important fossil called Ida. her discovery, her scientific study by a team led by Jorn Hurum (who named Ida after his five year old daughter), the world in which she lived, and her value to science are described well and with an open mind. Colin Tudge does share the enthusiasm for Ida, with the famous scientists on the research team, but maintains an even handed approach to her fascinating discovery. Indeed, the telling of the story of Ida is gripping, and places the reader in Ida's Eocene world, and into modern scientific study, with equal interest.

I highly recommend the must read book The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor by Colin Tudge, to anyone fascinated by human origins, and the discovery of what may prove to be one of humanities very earliest ancestors. The chance discovery of Ida represents a true turning point in primate and human evolutionary history. As a result, Ida will find herself, as Jorn Hurum predicts, in the pages of every scientific textbook in the future.

Read the fascinating and intriguing The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor by Colin Tudge, and be swept away bu the wondrous story of Ida and her place in the human family album. The story preserved in the little fossil Ida is really the story of ourselves.

The Heart Of Marketing by Judith Sherven & Jim Sniechowski - Book review

The Heart of Marketing

Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back

By: Judith Sherven, Jim Sniechowski

Published: May 1, 2009
Format: Paperback, 182 pages
ISBN-10: 1600375596
ISBN-13: 978-1600375590
Publisher: Morgan James Publishing

"In short, it's about putting your heart into marketing", write former therapists and the founders of the Soft Sell Marketing Association Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski about their groundbreaking and inspirational book The Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back. The authors describe how marketing can serve the needs of the customer, both materially and spiritually, by creating a long term and mutually beneficial relationship for everyone.

Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski understand that many marketers feel uncomfortable with hard sell techniques. Those traditional selling methods fail to satisfy the deeper emotional needs of both the buyer and the seller. The authors describe how they felt empty when offered the typical sales and marketing programs, but chalked it up to their relative inexperience. Over time, they discovered that many other sales representatives and marketers felt the same level of discomfort that they experienced in their own business. Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski discovered the insight that marketing is more about the heart than most marketers even realize.

Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski (both shown in photo left) recognize the importance of heart to heart connections between the soft sell marketer and the buyer. Through genuine openness and authenticity, the soft seller creates a deeper relationship with the customer that is far beyond simply a commercial one. The authors know instinctively that there is no real competition between hard sell and soft sell marketers. Both styles have their customer bases, and both connect with customers in different ways. In an internet world, where the marketer is entirely unknown to the prospective customer, it's essential that a relationship be developed and nurtured with the prospect long before a marketing message is even part of the conversation.

For me, the power of the book is its no nonsense question and answer format that demonstrates clearly the power of building deep lasting relationships between the marketer and the customer. Indeed, the authors point out that both parties have spiritual and emotional needs that must be met for a truly satisfying connection. The heart is the focus of the book, and that emphasis on human relationships on a personal level, is the key to soft sell marketing. The internet is a real test of soft sell relationship based marketing in action. The authors describe how building relationships on a personal level, before presenting any sales or marketing message, is crucial to internet marketing success. Soft sell heart based marketing is made for marketing on the internet.

I highly recommend the enlightening and gratifying book The Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back by Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski, to any marketers who feel uncomfortable with hard sell marketing concepts that fail to put relationships and connection building at the forefront of their marketing program. In the place of these hard sell techniques, the authors offer the proven, and emotionally satisfying soft cell marketing idea.

Read the marketing paradigm changing book The Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back by Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski, and develop open and transparent relationships with potential customers. People prefer to buy from those who they know, like and trust to have their best interests at heart. When a sale is a collaborative creation, the result is spiritually gratifying for all concerned.
