The Soccer Mom Myth by Michele Miller & Holly Buchanan - Book review
The Soccer Mom Myth
The New Reality of Marketing to Women
By: Michele Miller & Holly Buchanan
Published: March 10, 2008
ISBN-10: 1932226567
ISBN-13: 978-1932226560
Hardcover: 232 pages
Publisher: Wizard Academy Press
How to market to women demands a personalized approach, that goes beyond popular stereotypes, write Michele Miller and Holly Buchanan, in their important new book The Soccer Mom Myth: The New Reality of Marketing to Women. Women aren't responding to traditional advertising and marketing campaigns and strategies of considering women a niche market. Instead, a personalized marketing approach that speaks to women as individuals is essential to success.
Michele Miller (photo left) and Holly Buchanan not only describe why it's important to market to women as individuals, but they also show the reader how to speak to women with an appropriate message. Citing statistics that demonstrate the dominance of women as buying decision makers both online and offline, the authors emphasize the critical importance of understanding women and their buying motives.
Women don't consider themselves part of a stereotypical group like the myth of soccer moms in the title. As a result, marketers are forced to consider women as individuals with different needs and desires. Failure to make that leap to speaking to women on a personal level will doom a company or e-commerce website to disaster. There is much more to this important book than simply a discussion of the importance of the growing force of women as purchase decision makers.
Holly Buchanan (photo left) and Michele Miller go beyond the why of marketing to women, and demonstrate how to conduct your marketing efforts to women more successfully. They describe how to personalize your message to empower the female consumer, that takes into account societal and gender differences, between men and women.
The authors take a holistic approach to marketing, that considers the individual's needs, within the larger context of marketing language, buyer psychology, and consumer personae. From practical tips on blogging and designing a female friendly website to conducting more insightful market research, the book is a handbook for successful marketing to women.
For me, the power of the book is its practical application of theory and research tot the real world of marketing to women. Instead of only concerning themselves with why the female market is dominant and growing, the authors expect the reader to understand that fact from the beginning of the book. After the importance of the female consumer is established, the writers get down to the business of showing the reader how to market to women in an effective and personal way.
I highly recommend The Soccer Mom Myth: The New Reality of Marketing to Women by Michele Miller and Holly Buchanan, for any business people who are serious about creating a marketing message, that speaks directly to the individual female consumer. Instead, the book is a powerful step by step textbook for marketing to women the right way.
Read The Soccer Mom Myth: The New Reality of Marketing to Women by Michele Miller and Holly Buchanan and you will never listen to marketing myths about women again.

Bounce! by Barry J. Moltz - Book review
Bounce!
Failure, Resiliency, and Confidence to Achieve Your Next Great Success
By: Barry J. Moltz
Published: Jan 28, 2008
ISBN: 9780470224083
Format: Hardcover, 242pp
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons Inc
This is not another book about coming back from failure, writes Barry Moltz in his empowering new book Bounce!: Failure, Resiliency, and Confidence to Achieve Your Next Great Success.Instead, the book is about developing the confidence and resiliency to prepare for both the successes and the failures, in your business and in life.
Barry Moltz discusses his failures in business openly and honestly. He describes how the conventional wisdom of learning from failure is not the best approach to understanding business setbacks. For the author, the standard linear models of business success and failure teach the wrong lessons. Instead of thinking in straight lines, success and failure should be thought of as cycles. No one's career or life experience travels in a straight line, as outcomes may be perceived in different ways, depending upon different ideas of what constitutes success.
Business fortunes ebb and flow, take circular and meandering paths, and even at times reach dead ends. Not every business failure teaches lessons that can be applied like down payments to future success. Very often, business collapse teaches nothing, and that insight is an important step toward building confidence. Instead of focus on outward events, it is more important to accept and recognize events for their effect on the individual. Without the resilience to bounce from success or from failure, the person lacks perspective on what is important in life.
For Barry Moltz )photo left), the traditional rags to riches, rich to even more rich, and the comeback from setbacks archetypes are myths that fail to understand the randomness, chaos theory, and special timing of events. All too often, ego and shame stand in the way of developing the humility to accept that not everything is under the entrepreneur's control.
Seeking and understanding new ways for determining success can move a person, from a sense of failure, toward a greater understanding of personal achievement. What appears as failure from one direction, can be considered a tremendous success from another viewpoint. Thinking only in a false dichotomy of success and failure outcomes leads nowhere, and prevents developing an effective decision making process.
For me, the power of the book is the personal empowerment that results from understanding success and failure as two sides of the same coin. Instead of viewing them as the only two possible outcomes, the author suggests that both are part of the repeating cycle of a business. The establishment of a process for decision making builds the confidence and humility to bounce from point to point. The book teaches the importance of creating your brand of success. With the redefining of success in your own terms, you become ready to embrace success and failure as they come, and as simply parts of the process.
I highly recommend Bounce!: Failure, Resiliency, and Confidence to Achieve Your Next Great Success by Barry Moltz for anyone seeking a greater understanding of success and failure in business. Instead of offering conventional wisdom, the author challenges the reader to redefine success in your own terms, resulting in greater confidence, resilience to change, and the ability to bounce.
Read Bounce!: Failure, Resiliency, and Confidence to Achieve Your Next Great Success by Barry Moltz and learn to bounce from both success and failure to even greater personal success in your own life.

Trevor Gay: Simplicity & Adding Meaning To Work - Blog Business Success Radio
Blogger Trevor Gay, author of Simplicity is the Key, describes how to create a more people friendly workplace by removing obvious barriers and replacing them with true meaning through simplicity to build your business and career success.
Trevor Gay is my internet radio show guest on Blog Business Success; hosted live on Blog Talk Radio.
The show airs live on Thursday, March 6, at 8:00 pm Eastern Time; 5:00 pm Pacific Time.
Blogger Trevor Gay, author of Simplicity is the Key, describes how to create a more people friendly workplace by removing obvious barriers and replacing them with true meaning through simplicity. You will learn:
* How to show front line employees how they are truly valued
* The right, and surprising, way to gain power in the organization
* Discover the power of storytelling for more effective leadership and management
* Why using plain language in communication is better than jargon or buzzwords
Trevor Gay (photo left) has an obsession about making things simpler in management and leadership. Following a 35 year career in senior management in the UK National Health Service (NHS) – the third largest employer in the world after the Chinese Army and Indian Railways - Trevor left the ‘security blanket’ of the NHS in 2005 to become a freelance consultant, speaker and writer on management and leadership. Trevor believes management and leadership is simple. He argues it is we human beings that make things complex in management and business.
He has written four books in the last three years – the best known being Simplicity is the Key and you can see more about what he does by going to his, needless to say, very simple website known as Simplicity.
Although Trevor has the academic management qualifications he prefers to talk subjectively, using metaphors anecdotes and stories to illustrate his beliefs. Since leaving the NHS Trevor has been in great demand to talk and spread the word about simplicity and he was recently interviewed on Fox Business Network TV in a live link up to the United States from London, England.
Trevor Gay blogs at Simplicity Blog.
